PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Let it be said the United States’ Goffin’ Association knows how to put on a spectacle, and the U.S. Open, this one here, is at the consensus No. 1 public golf course in Grey Goatee Nation, which means you can play it in some other week if you can get a tee time and fish in your pockets for fye-hunnerd-fitty bucks.
It’s a good walk. I wandered through practice rounds all day Monday, Tuesday and today, which told me two things: 1) the golf course is freaking amazing, and 2) it’s uphill both ways from the golf course to Grey Goatee Global HQ in the media center through Fan Central by the Merchandise Tent past several concession stands where the beer calls my name and I can’t answer for lack of breath.
Tomorrow, the media shuttles start running, just in time for the start of the golf tournament. My guy (my assignment, my raison d’etre) tees off on No. 10, and the shuttle will save my old dead ass, thank you very much.
