They’re putting on a major at Quail Hollow this week without Fred Couples, which — though he’s a fixture at the Masters –is not so unusual these days. So the prospect of Couples playing tournament golf within driving distance of Grey Goatee World HQ is a welcome one and, though it’s not a major, the Boeing Classic at Snoqualmie Ridge offers a rich field (this year including Couples) and one of the favorite venues on the old guys’ circuit.
Couples, 57, still has the silky swing and easy-flowing charisma he had when he won his one major at the 1992 Masters. For observers of a certain age, he’s the guy we hoped to be. We could still get there.
The PGA Championship lacks nothing in charisma, but with Jordan Spieth, it’s not the roguish charm of a Couples. Spieth will have to make do with being a nice guy and a great putter. He seems to get by.
