Steve Stricker looks so intelligent and authoritative in his American Family Insurance hat you won’t notice he’s bald.
Right now, he’s holding a five-stroke lead through 12 holes as pro golf’s over-50 boys play the final round of the Regions Tradition, washed away by rain yesterday, at the Greystone Founders Course.
Stricker, 52, has won 12 times but never a major on the PGA tour, but he looks poised to claim one now in the Champions Tour’s first major of the season. Some guys look good in their baldness. Steve, you can leave your hat on. Yes, do.
Wednesday, May 15
Stricker won by six shots, and this week at Bethpage Black he’ll have a chance to be the first man, balding or not, to win a senior major one week and a PGA Tour major the next.
The guy we call Brooksie Cupcake will probably win the PGA. It’s a major. It’s what he does. When he does, he’ll be the first golfer to hold back-to-back titles in two different majors at the same time,
When Cupcake wins the U.S. Open next month, he’ll be the first-ever to win three in a row. Will he open as the betting favorite? Of course not. But we know where the smart money belongs.
